Aikman thinks football could lose its spot at No. 1 sport

Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman has a trio of Super Bowl rings, a bust in the Hall of Fame, and a spot next to Joe Buck every Sunday during football season.

Well, two out of three ain’t bad.

But Aikman thinks that the popularity of the sport that made him rich and famous could be on the verge of a decline.

“I believe, and this is my opinion, that at some point football is not going to be the No. 1 sport,” Aikman said recently at an event in L.A., per the Los Angeles Times (via Yahoo! Sports).  “You talk about the ebbs and flows of what’s popular and what’s not.  At some point, the TV ratings are not going to be there.”

Aikman then acknowledged that current trends don’t point to that outcome.  “I can’t justify that because the numbers say otherwise, but I guess time will tell,” Aikman said.

The concern comes from the potential impact of concussions on the supply of future football players, and from the possibly excessive presence of NFL games on TV.

“At one time, watching football was an event,” Aikman said.  “Monday Night Football was a big event. Now you get football Sunday, you get it Monday, you get it Thursday and, late in the year, you get it on Saturday.

“People in Los Angeles realized, ‘You know what, life’s OK without the NFL.’  If I’m an owner, I don’t want any fan thinking that.”

Of course, people in L.A. realized that 15 years ago.  In the ensuing decade-and-a-half, the NFL has continuously grown to even greater heights of popularity.

Besides, not having a team in town is far different from not having access to football on TV.  While there may be challenges to getting folks to choose to attend games in sufficient numbers and, at some point, a decline in the number of young people who play, there is no shortage on the horizon of folks who will watch.

Aikman’s remarks came less than two weeks after more than 166 million tuned in for the Super Bowl.  So while it’s fair to say that, at some future point in human history, the NFL will be eclipsed by hovercraft racing or light-saber fencing or full-contact frolf, that day doesn’t seem to be coming any time soon, especially since the NFL seems to be committed to making the changes necessary to adjust and adapt and continue to grow.

Report: San Jose Sharks interested in Rick Nash

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Rick Nash is the hot commodity as Monday’s trade deadline draws closer.

Despite plenty of speculation centering on the Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers as potential landing spots, the San Jose Sharks have become a strong contender to acquire the 27-year-old left winger, according to TSN.ca.

The Sharks, however, have told the Blue Jackets that any deal involving 22-year-old forward Logan Couture is a non-starter, according to the report.

A potential trade to San Jose would team Nash with Sharks center and good friend Joe Thornton, TSN.ca reported.

Nash is under contract through the 2017-18 season, with a cap hit of $7.8 million per season and a no-movement clause.

In 60 games this season, Nash has 20 goals and 22 assists. Against the Sharks on Tuesday night, Nash had a goal and an assist in Columbus’ 6-3 win.

Magic Johnson starts network targeting blacks

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Earvin “Magic” Johnson is launching a basic cable television network targeting black viewers with positive, uplifting images of African Americans.

The former Los Angeles Lakers star tells the Los Angeles Times that his 24-hour Aspire channel also will offer opportunities for blacks who have struggled to find work in mainstream Hollywood.

Aspire’s mix will include film, TV, music, comedy, performing arts and shows about faith.

The 52-year-old Johnson, who serves as an NBA analyst for ESPN and ABC, was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. He says he’s wanted a vehicle to showcase positive images of African Americans with stories written, produced and directed by blacks.

Comcast Corp. reached an agreement with the FCC and Department of Justice to diversify.

Johnson’s channel will launch on June 30.

Peter O’Malley drops out of bidding for Dodgers

Peter O’Malley drops out of bidding for Dodgers

Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports that Peter O’Malley has withdrawn his bid to reacquire the Dodgers. O’Malley, whose family owned the franchise for 47 years until selling to NewsCorp in 1998, was partially backed by South Korean conglomerate E-Land.

O’Malley was one of 11 bidders who made it through the first round of the process, but Shaikin hears that O’Malley was concerned he might not win the bidding even if he made the highest offer. This could have something to do with O’Malley previously slamming outgoing owner Frank McCourt in the press.

The 10 groups remaining in the bidding are expected to submit new offers this week. McCourt faces an April 30 deadline to sell the team and has agreed to identify a specific buyer by April 1. The sale is expected to fetch an MLB record price tag in excess of $1 billion.

Quarterback guru Tom Martinez dies at 66

Posted by Mike Florio on February 21, 2012, 9:32 PM EST

wpid 120131 bradymartinez hmed 6p photoblog600 Quarterback guru Tom Martinez dies at 66

Tom Martinez, a long-time quarterback coach best known for serving as Tom Brady’s personal mentor, has died of a heart attack suffered during a dialysis session, according to WVCB in Boston.

Martinez was 66.

He was awaiting a kidney transplant, and Brady had been personally trying to help the effort.  “He’s a great friend of mine for a very long time and taught me how to throw a football at a very young age,” Brady told ABC News in January.  “He’s been looking for a kidney for quite a while.”  At one point, Brady attempted via his Facebook page to find a potential living donor for Martinez.

Before the 2011 season started, Brady visited with Martinez for a tune up.

”He asked me to come out, right before the season started.  Labor Day weekend,” Martinez told Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald last year.  “He said he was off.  His throwing was off.  So I went out there Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.  We went through the film.  Then all of a sudden, everything else fell into place.  Within about an hour, he was back to the old Tom Brady.  Then he had that 517-yard game. . . .  I guess what we did worked.”

It definitely did, from the time Brady first attended a clinic put on by Martinez at age 13.

We extend our condolences to Martinez’s family, friends, and colleagues.

Kyle Quincey, after Avalanche-Lightning deal, winds up with Detroit Red Wings

The Tampa Bay Lightning aren’t just trading their own players as the NHL trade deadline approaches.

Tampa Bay on Tuesday acquired Kyle Quincey from the Colorado Avalanche for forward Steve Downie, then flipped Quincey to the Detroit Red Wings for a first-round pick and prospect Sebastien Piche.

— FIRST PART OF DEAL: Downie to Colorado

The deal continues to tip the market in favor of sellers like the Lightning, who got second- and fourth-round picks from the Philadelphia Flyers for defenseman Pavel Kubina last week.

Quincey, 26, has five goals and eight assists in 54 games for the Avalanche, often spending time with the top power-play unit. He, like Downie, is a restricted free agent after the season and currently carries a $3.25 million cap hit, which the Red Wings can more than afford—before that acquisition, they could’ve added about $25 million in contracts at the trade deadline, which is Monday.

The Red Wings drafted Quincey (6-2, 207) 132nd overall in 2003 and lost him on waivers to the Avalanche in 2008. He’ll provide depth along their blue line and help for the power play.

Detroit leads the NHL with 84 points and has won 23 straight games at home.
