Torii Hunter won’t rejoin Angels until son’s matter is settled

Torii Hunter, who was placed on the restricted list after learning that his 17-year-old son had been arrested on sexual assault charges, doesn’t plan to rejoin the Angels until things are settled with the case.

That’s according to his son’s attorney, Todd Shapiro, who told Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times that Hunter will remain home until ”this matter is resolved or under control.”

Shapiro is optimistic about a quick resolution to the case. He said that the girl allegedly assaulted has recanted her accusation in a phone call that was unknowingly taped by a Hunter family friend. Being that the charges and the call happened in Texas, the call could be recorded without her permission.

17-year-old Darius McClinton-Hunter is currently free on bond following his arrest Monday. Shapiro has maintained that his client is innocent of the accusations.

It’s been one year since Brian Roberts played for the Orioles

Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of Brian Roberts‘ last game action for the Orioles and concussions have limited the former All-Star second baseman to just 98 total games since the beginning of 2010.

Roberts spoke to Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun about his year on the sidelines, calling it “extremely hard and very frustrating at times, but at the same time I’m very grateful for where I am today.”

During the past week he’s been fielding ground balls and even diving to make plays, which Roberts called “a big hurdle physically as well as mentally.”

As for when he might actually return to the Orioles’ lineup, there’s still no timetable but Roberts indicated that the team may soon begin talking about a minor-league rehab schedule. That may not sound like a ton of progress, but at this point Roberts is simply trying to save his career at age 34 and in the third season of a four-year, $40 million contract.

Pioli says Chiefs have three good QBs, didn’t need to draft one

Kansas City wanted to sign Peyton Manning this offseason, and when that didn’t work out, there was some talk that the Chiefs might draft a quarterback in the first round. That didn’t happen either, however, and Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli says that’s fine, because the Chiefs don’t need a quarterback.

According to Pioli, starter Matt Cassel and backups Brady Quinn and Ricky Stanzi have the Chiefs well positioned at the most important position.

“I think that we have a really good quarterback,” Pioli said on WHB in Kansas City, via SportsRadioInterviews.com. “I think we have three good quarterbacks. I think the guy who’s set to be our starting quarterback is a good quarterback, he’s a good starting NFL quarterback. . . . I think as he gets more opportunities, Matt is gonna continue to show people that he’s a good NFL quarterback. It’s interesting. I’ve been out and about town with my family, and I talk to fans, you talk to fans, you hear different things, and there’s a lot of times where I hear from people — there’s people out there that don’t understand the criticism of Matt, or this growing groundswell in pockets of Matt allegedly not being a good enough quarterback.”

Cassel didn’t look like a really good quarterback last season, but Pioli remains convinced that he is one, and he also believes Quinn and Stanzi are capable. And he said using a first-round pick on a quarterback this year would have been a mistake.

“I think we would’ve been reaching,” Pioli said. “By the time we made our first pick there were three quarterbacks off the board.”

Pioli and Kevin Kietzman of WHB got a little testy with each other as Kietzman pressed Pioli about why the Chiefs couldn’t have traded up in the draft, with Pioli at one point asking, “Are you going to let me answer?” when he felt Kietzman was interrupting him, and Pioli zinging Kietzman with, “I hope you become general manager of the Denver Broncos” when Kietzman told Pioli that he would have traded the Chiefs’ entire draft to move up and take Andrew Luck first overall. Pioli doesn’t seem to like the relentless questions from some in Kansas City about whether the Chiefs can win with Cassel.

And Pioli surely knows that the questions will not go away until the Chiefs do win with Cassel. So Pioli just has to hope he’s right that Cassel is a really good quarterback.

Drew Storen aiming to return around the All-Star break

As fill-in closer Henry Rodriguez continues to do his tight-rope act in the ninth inning Drew Storen said yesterday that he’s aiming to return from the disabled list and reclaim the Nationals’ closer job around the All-Star break.

Storen underwent surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow on April 11 and has progressed to playing catch. The good news is that he reported no problems after making 100 throws. The bad news is that he still has a long way to go and lots of potential setbacks to avoid.

Rodriguez successfully converted his ninth save last night, but he’s blown three save chances and walked 12 batters in 17 innings. Of course, he’s also racked up 22 strikeouts in those 17 innings and opponents are hitting just .161.

Colt McCoy says he’s working harder than ever

Posted by Josh Alper on May 17, 2012, 9:39 AM EDT

Colt McCoy doesn’t sound like he’s ready to cede his starting quarterback job to Brandon Weeden just yet.

Outside of a report that the Browns told McCoy that they wouldn’t draft a quarterback in the first round, a report the Browns denied, we haven’t heard anything from McCoy about the team’s decision to draft Weeden. He didn’t address that choice directly in an email to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, but he did send a message that he’s not buying into the widespread belief that the job is going to Weeden.

“I’m a competitor and I’m working harder than ever,” McCoy wrote in the email.

While the Browns say that the competition is open, all the hard work in the world might not be enough to help McCoy. The Browns didn’t take a 28-year-old quarterback with the 22nd overall pick to have him sit on the bench one minute longer than is absolutely necessary. Everything they say that isn’t about the competition is tinged with undertones that Weeden will wind up with the job.

McCoy still has reason to work hard, though. A strong preseason could interest another team in making a deal for him, opening up an opportunity for McCoy that doesn’t include a player drafted to be the Browns’ starting quarterback.
