And That Happened: Thursday’s scores and highlights

wpid tim lincecum11 And That Happened: Thursday’s scores and highlights

Giants 2, Twins 1: Welcome back to the land of the living, Tim Lincecum.  Timmy fans 12 and allows only three hits in seven shutout innings, notching his best start in over a month. No managers resigned after this game.

Nationals 1, Mariners 0: Hit this one up yesterday, but the game itself got lost in the shuffle of Riggleman going all Johnny Paycheck on the Nats’ butts. The Nats have won 11 of 12. No matter what they do going forward, it’s gonna suck for Riggleman’s legacy. If they continue to win, well, he wasn’t that important. If they lose, he quit on the team and sent them into a tailspin.

Mets 4, Athletics 1: Chris Capuano pitched six scoreless innings but left early because his side was hurting. Jose Reyes was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Rain delay of 2:15. Game time of 2:37.

Cardinals 12, Phillies 2: Oswalt’s exit — and his rather fatalistic attitude about it after the game — is obviously the big story here. After a pretty crappy week, the Cards managed a 14-hit onslaught supporting Chris Carpenter, who got his first win in ages. Best part of the game, pointed out to me by Kiwicricket: Fernando Salas was brought into a 6-1 game with two outs in the eighth and threw one pitch which ended the inning. Then, despite a six-run outburst by the Cards in the bottom of the inning, La Russa sent out a different pitcher to finish the ninth. Viva la specialization.

Diamondbacks 5, Royals 3: Daniel Hudson becomes roughly the 2,305th pitcher in major league baseball to get his ninth win this year. The Dbacks sweep Kansas City, winning their 15th of the their last 19 road games.

So what was Jim Riggleman thinking?

wpid jim riggleman nationals e12881905991386 So what was Jim Riggleman thinking?

I’m still pretty stunned by the Jim Riggleman resignation.  And to be honest, I still can’t decide if it was a smart move by Riggleman or the dumbest thing ever.

On the one hand, Riggleman says that he’s been “disrespected.”  We’ve heard that from wide receivers and power forwards before, but we’re not used to hearing it from 58-year-old managers.  I can picture a level of disrespect from a boss that might make me snap like Riggleman appears to have snapped, but it would be pretty extreme. More than merely not acceding to my demands that a contract option be picked up, as is reportedly the case with Riggleman. I’m thinking more like Riggleman asking that it be picked up and Mike Rizzo giving him an atomic wedgie.

It’s also possible that this was totally calculated.  Perhaps Riggleman wasn’t treated with extreme disrespect but he nonetheless knew for certain that the Nationals were not going to keep him on after 2011 no matter what happened. Perhaps he viewed it as a good time to leave — with a team playing great baseball and the perception that he rallied them into over-achievement – thereby setting himself up as a bit of a hotter property on the 2012 managerial market than he’d otherwise be.  Risky — by this point I think people have a good sense of what Jim Riggleman is all about — but not inconceivable.

Ultimately, though, I’m thinking this was a bad play for Riggleman.  Despite the immediate F-You thrill that telling Mike Rizzo to shove it may have brought him, the perception from all of this is likely going to be that Riggleman quit on his team in a snit. A team that — against all odds — may have a legitimate shot at the playoffs.

We tolerate the playing of the disrespect card from those wide receivers and power forwards a bit more because they’re special and rare talents and are given more leeway if they are, on occasion, temperamental. Not so with managers, who are supposed to be a source of stability.  As it stands right now, I don’t think I’d want to hire Jim Riggleman to manage my team based on this move alone. I think a lot of teams will feel that way.

Maybe Riggleman too will feel this way before he goes to bed tonight and the adrenaline wears off.  And maybe, just maybe, this will be the scene tomorrow afternoon in the Nationals’ clubhouse before they take on the White Sox in Chicago.  Can’t hurt, right?

Canucks’ imperfections go beyond Luongo

BOSTON — It’s never a good thing when the starting goalie is asked if he knows if he’s starting the next game. Especially when there may only be three left in the entire season. But minutes after allowing all four of the Bruins goals, that’s what Luongo faced.

“Bud,” he said to the questioner. “Game just finished.”

Is Luongo?

Until going to Boston, he was the picture of calm and confidence during the Stanley Cup Finals. He was on his way to shaking his reputation as an unstable big-game goalie. That has changed dramatically after being lit up in TD Garden for 12 goals in two games.

“He’s the same as anyone else. He’s been playing good the whole year,” Daniel Sedin said following the Canucks’ second consecutive loss. “Right now there’s a few games left, he can’t be down or stuff like that. He has to play his game, play the way that got him here and we as a team.”

That may be the bigger issue here. Luongo will take his heat for his imperfections against the Bruins, made more obvious by the impenetrable Tim Thomas across the ice. But he’s not getting any help from his teammates. The dozen goals he allowed is an ugly number. So too, is the one goal his teammates have supported him with in two games.

One goal.

Henrik Sedin doesn’t have a point in this series and just registered his first two shots on goal in Game 4. Daniel Sedin had a goal and assist in Game 2 but hasn’t done anything otherwise.

Ryan Kesler? The guy who took over the Nashville series and refused to let the Predators beat the Canucks? The guy who was likely the frontrunner for the Conn Smythe until, oh, about the moment he deflected a shot past his own goalie in Game 3? He has one assist in this series. He was a minus-4 in Boston.

Yes, Luongo has been bad, but there’s a lot of blame to go around. Including the Canucks’ inability to match Boston’s emotion and drive for two games.

“I would say that they were probably the hungrier team the last two games,” Luongo said.

That’s a problem. Like they did in Round 1 against the Blackhawks, the Canucks have allowed a team back in the series after taking a commanding early lead. But it’s worse now.

Instead of having to win four consecutive games like the Blackhawks nearly did, the Bruins need just two more.

If you believe in game-to-game momentum, the Bruins certainly have it. Good thing for the Canucks, they don’t believe in it. They can’t.

“We had all the momentum coming here,” said Henrik Sedin. “Chicago had all the momentum for Game 7. Nashville had all the momentum when we came there for Game 6. I don’t know. There’s three games left or two games left. There’s a lot of talk on momentum from the outside but we’re focused on the next game.”

They’re also focused on trying to solve Thomas. During one five-minute interview, Daniel Sedin said the Canucks have to “find a way to solve him” at least three times.

They would never admit it, but Thomas is in their heads. The Canucks were satisfied with their shot total—38—and they were also pleased with the amount of quality chances they got on Thomas.

“We had a few point-blank shots tonight,” Daniel Sedin said.

None of them went in. Thomas has the look of a special goalie going on a special run and that’s trouble for the Canucks.

Now, headed back to Vancouver for Friday’s Game 5, Thomas and his teammates have to find a way to keep it rolling. The Bruins seem to play better in the face of adversity. They play better when they’re emotionally charged. For the first time all series, they have the momentum, and the adversity has shifted to the opposing dressing room.

“Every time this year that we’ve faced adversity as a team, we’ve rose to the challenge,” Thomas said. “We needed to do it one more time because we were down 2-0. Now we’ve done that for two games. The challenge for us will be to keep doing that.”

Malhotra’s return gives Canucks a lift in more than faceoffs

VANCOUVER — Manny Malhotra made his decision after lunch on Saturday. He was ready to go.

Malhotra, a veteran Vancouver Canucks center, was back in the lineup for the first time since March 16, when he was hit in the face with a puck, requiring emergency eye surgery.

On a night that ended with the Canucks winning 3-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals over the Boston Bruins, Malhotra was Vancouver’s first reason to go crazy.

He drew huge cheers in warm-ups from the Rogers Arena crowd and he said after the game he had a hard time managing his emotions early on.

“It was kind of sensory overload,” Malhotra said. “Just the noise, the crowd into it, all the towels waving. It was the first time I’ve seen a home crowd that excited in the playoffs.”

After receiving a huge standing ovation during his first shift, Malhotra settled down and focused on what he does best. Winning faceoffs.

He didn’t miss a beat following the long layoff, winning six of seven faceoffs against the Bruins, good for 86 percent. Even with his return and success, the Bruins won 53 percent of the faceoffs, making Malhotra’s role even more crucial moving forward.

“He did exactly what we all expected,” Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said. “That line played more minutes than throughout the San Jose series and more than in the first game against Boston. So I’m excited to have him back and I think he’s only going to get better as we move forward here.”

The Canucks played without defenseman Dan Hamhuis, who was injured in Game 1 following a hip-check on Milan Lucic. Defenseman Andrew Alberts was inserted in his place, and played a solid game during his 11:40 of ice time.

Alberts led the Canucks with six hits.

As for Malhotra, he finished the game with 7:26 of ice time in his first game back, blocking one shot along with his success in the faceoff circle.

But his comeback was more than that — it provided an emotional lift for teammates.

“We were all excited for Manny,” Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo said. “He’s a great leader and a great teammate, great friend … as a group we were just so excited for him that he’s able to come back and contribute.”

Captains must answer the call in Stanley Cup Finals’ Game 3

BOSTON — The Boston Bruins are approaching Monday’s Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals as a must-win.

“We have to,” Bruins captain Zdeno Chara said Sunday.

They trail the Vancouver Canucks 2-0 as the series switches to Boston. It’s a crucial game and exactly the time leaders must be at their best. Until now Chara and Canucks captain Henrik Sedin have had little impact on this series.

In Chara’s case, it’s worse than that.

The captain who steps up first could be the one who changes the course of the finals.

The breakdown: Chara is getting heat after Alex Burrows beat him for Saturday’s game-winning goal 11 seconds into overtime.

“As his teammate, you have his back, you win or lose as a team. It’s not one guy’s fault,” Bruins forward Milan Lucic said.

Chara hasn’t been the dominant physical presence we expected in this series — that must change in Game 3. He also sees room for improvement in puck management.

“We didn’t manage the puck the way we should have. It seems on the ice that they controlled the game. When we do things right, you saw what we could do,” Chara said. “When we do manage the puck and control the game, it’s an even game.”

The breakdown: It’s not that Sedin has been bad in two games against the Bruins, it’s just that expectations are so much higher. He leads the playoffs with 21 points. He’s still looking for his first point in the finals after having 12 against the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference finals.

Game 1 snapped a six-game point streak for Sedin. He sees room for improvement, especially on the power play. His assessment of the power play?

“Oh, terrible,” he said on Sunday. “We’re losing pucks in the wrong areas, we’re not as sharp as we want to be. We’re missing passes. We know we’re better than that.”

Game 3 is 8 p.m. ET Monday at Boston’s TD Garden.
