Predators’ Suter not interested in signing during season, adds to trade intrigue

If Nashville Predators All-Star defenseman Ryan Suter, a pending unrestricted free agent, didn’t have the the rest of the league’s attention already, he’s got it now.

Suter told reporters at the NHL All-Star Game’s media day on Friday that he’s not interested in signing an extension with the Predators before the NHL trade deadline on Feb. 27. That adds to speculation that the Predators could look to trade him—partner Shea Weber is a restricted free agent, and both are due big-time deals—despite the fact that Predators GM David Poile has given no indication that he’s considering it.

Regardless, Suter says no pre-deadline deal is going to come.

“I feel (signing in February) would be more of a distraction than anything,” Suter said, according to CSNPhilly.com. “We’ve never had a timeline or deadline. We’re just focusing on winning. Everything else will take care of itself.

“I don’t see it being a benefit by hurrying up and trying to get something done. I’m a Nashville Predator until July. I will focus on making my team better.”

Goaltender Pekka Rinne’s record-breaking contract extension notwithstanding, Nashville typically spends well below the NHL’s salary cap. Weber’s age (26), current salary ($7.5 million) and annual Norris Trophy-contender status coupled with fact that Suter is regarded with only slightly less esteem makes it easy to doubt whether Nashville can pay them both.

Suter, 27, currently makes $3.5 million, and his contributions to the Predators go beyond his five goals and 23 assists; Behindthenet.ca’s Corsi Rel QoC essentially measures the quality of competition a given player faces based on the amount of shots they take while on the ice. A Rel QoC greater than zero means that a player is facing better-than-average competition. Weber’s 1.337 and Suter’s 1.301 are both top 20 among defenseman who have played 30 games or more.

Not that Nashville is looking to trade Suter—the Predators are 9-1-0 in their last 10 games and fifth in the Western Conference with 64 points. Suter said he’s interested in seeing what his own team adds as the deadline approaches and communicates regularly with Poile.

“Talking to David, I’m pretty confident that we are going to out and get some guys to help us win,” Suter said, according to USA Today.

“Whenever (Poile) runs into me, he will pull me aside and tell me what’s going on,” Suter said. “That’s maybe every couple of weeks.”

And Poile, for his right, has been steadfast in stating that he believes the Predators, who last season advanced in the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, will spend what it takes to keep their homegrown defensemen in the fray. On Friday, in an interview with ESPN.com, he reiterated that doing so was “our plan and our desire,” and that the Predators’ days as a bottom-five payroll team are over.

“That’s the conversation we’ve been having,” Poile told ESPN.com before Suter broke his news. “Those days are past. We have new ownership in place. They’ve made a commitment to me and the players and both Ryan and Shea know that, because of the dollars they’re going to be getting and what we need to do to win that Cup, we’ll be spending what is necessary to contend.”

Weber, meanwhile, said Suter’s announcement doesn’t change anything. “Obviously, he’s focused on winning,” Nashville’s captain said, according to USA Today. “The biggest thing for us is to keep what we have going going. We are playing good hockey.”

Weber said if Suter believed it was going to be a distraction “then he is doing the right thing by putting it off.”

Added Weber: “I’m surprised maybe that it took him so long to get it off his chest.”

Nets’ Shawne Williams to undergo foot surgery

New Jersey Nets small forward Shawne Williams will undergo surgery on Wednesday to remove a bone fragment in his left foot, the team announced.

A timetable for his return will be determined following the surgery, according to the team.

Williams has been out since Feb. 11.

The surgery will be performed at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan by foot specialist Dr. Martin O’Malley and Nets team orthopedist Dr. Riley Williams III.

Williams, who was signed to a two-year, $6.1 million contract in the offseason, has averaged 4.5 points and 2.7 rebounds in 20.6 minutes per game this season. He was a major disappointment after being signed away from the Knicks.

The 26-year-old, who was known for his long-range marksmanship, has shot just 28.6 percent from the field and 24.1 percent from 3-point range.

Williams becomes the fourth Nets player to have surgery this season, joining center Brook Lopez (foot), small forward Damion James (foot) and Keith Bogans (ankle/deltoid), who has since been waived.

The Nets (10-24) have been decimated by injuries more than any other team in the NBA, and have started a league-high 16 different lineups and 14 different players this season.

Great Moments in the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry

The long epic battle between the Yankees and the Red Sox is played out mostly on the baseball diamond. But there are minor skirmishes here and there. Like the time that the guy in Florida bought the domain name matching the name of the Red Sox’ new spring training complex and directed it to the New York Yankees’ website:

As of Tuesday afternoon, typing jetbluepark.com into a Web browser resulted in the New York Yankees homepage being unfurled onto the screen.

“It does?” said Sam Kennedy, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Boston Red Sox, when told Tuesday afternoon. Kennedy then watched as Red Sox senior adviser Charlie Steinberg typed jetbluepark.com onto his phone. “We’re going to have to look into that.”

But it wasn’t a Yankees fan who did it. Just some dude who lives in Fort Myers who thought it would be funny. Seems he just bought the domain last year before anyone associated with the Red Sox thought to do it.

Good thing the Stop Online Piracy Act is still in legislative limbo. If it was the law now the Red Sox probably would have the legal right to have the man shot. For starters.
